An old age pensioner living near Dunolly won a sweep of 400 pounds and promptly paid back 71 pounds 8 shillings to the govt being the pension he’d received of 7 shillings per week since 1902.

At a meeting of the Bet Bet Shire Council it was decided that a member for each riding would call meetings to form organisations and to devise measures to prevent fires and prevent the spreading of any that occur owing to the extraordinary growth of grass in recent months.

The school teacher at Betley, Mr. Parker, was mounting his good steed when it suddenly threw him resulting in a dislocated shoulder.

Following a small child falling down a disused mine shaft in suburban North Balwyn the Dunolly Tennis Club members probed a slight depression in the court and discovered an old mine shaft 48 feet in depth.

Dunolly, along with most of the western part of the state of Victoria, was devastated by a cyclone with much damage to many public and private buildings.

The Victorian Premier, Mr. Lawson, unveiled the soldiers memorial; a polished granite column inscribed with the names of the boys from Dunolly and district who gave their lives.

Stephen Starke was a very lucky chappie as he was bitten on the hand by a snake he had grabbed by the tail.
At the time of reporting (112 years ago) he received both medical and media attention and was declared out of danger.

Mr. Lee, the Dunolly butcher, had his leg broken above the ankle when a bullock fell on him.

At 10.35pm a meteor fell at Dunolly, travelling from a North to Southwesterly direction it lit up the whole place as bright as day for 30 seconds.

Two cases of Diptheria and several cases of Measles were reported in the Dunolly district, while the Dunolly Hospital fete collected a little over 350 pounds.

Serious flooding in Dunolly saw 10,000 pounds worth of damage to stock, crops and buildings isolated the township by ringing it with water and washed away much of the railway line in places.

There were a great deal of reports of the grumblings of the farmers at Eddington due to the effects of the building of the Laancoorie Weir had on their valuable farm land.

Mr. James Bell addressed a large gathering of people in the Dunolly Town Hall and babbled his intention to stand for election.
Word must have leaked out for as he left the hall Mr. Bell was met by 40 of the fire brigade members who carried him the length of Broadway to the Bendigo Hotel and gave him 3 loud, hearty cheers.

The Dunolly & District Hospital was officially opened by the aptly named Rev. Beer.
Yes, the hospital has hit the 150th.

1954
Fruit orchards at Bealiba were full of fruit trees, of all types and varieties, that were behaving most oddly by shedding leaves and fruit at a great rate of knots.

Apparently, they were also shedding strange Victorian children.

A meeting was held to discuss this wild new idea of the Back To Dunolly Movement; it was decided the programme should take place March 11-18 with horse races held over 2 days, donations were flooding in and accommodation had been booked for more than 400 people.
Councillor Costello was appointed President of the Movement.

Shockingly *tsk tsk* after celebrating the win of the Bet Bet Footy Club way past the legal licensing hours at the Golden Valley Hotel, licensee James Colling was slapped on the wrist and fined 45/, while 13 others, who were 'caught in the act' were also charged.

No, she didn't sway the judge's decision with her wilted flowers nor was it mere rootbeer they were enjoying at the Golden Valley Hotel (now a pile of bricks and cellar on the Bet Bet-Maryborough Rd).

The Inspector of Municipal Accounts, Mr. McCallum, did loudly declare that there was more than enough documented evidence to audit the books, no matter where they were tucked away!

A severe thunderstorm raged about the district for an hour, dropping an inch of wet stuff (25mm in the new money) washing away crops and fencing while leaving fruit trees badly damaged.

£12 and 1 shilling was raised at the Sacred Concert held at the Recreation Reserve to collect funds for the Dunolly Hospital. Attendance was small due to the weather being inclement and the driving rain bringing an early end to the entertainment.

The rate books, water trust book and general receipt book for the Bet Bet Shire was reported as missing from the Shire Offices.

Yes, that's right.
The women-folk were bored so they MAYBE scrapped the rate books to within an inch of their lives with flower, angels, cherubs and more flowers.
It was quite pretty!

Mr Carewickham, aged 82, an old Colonist who came from Tasmania with John Pascoe Fawkner on the Pickwick in 1837, died at the Dunolly Hospital.
