Two men, who were thought to be the gaol-breakers from Maryborough Gaol people had been warned about, arrived at Emu where they purchased a bottle of whisky before then made their way towards Logan.

Cast iron lamp poles, for kerosene lamps, from the streets of Tarnagulla were being sold off by the Bet Bet Shire Council for 2 pounds each, although locals were calling for some to be retained for sentimental reasons.
The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Dunolly and District Hospital was bequeathed 1000 pounds by Mr Walls.
The hospital was inspected by Mr Thomas of the Hospital and Charities Commission who agreed that the remodelling was well overdue.

The Dunolly Presbyterian Church Sunday School picnic was held in the public park; games and food were well enjoyed with fair weather all day.

Alfred John Barnett, pioneer in the surgical treatment of vascular disease, was born at Dunolly, the son of a dairy farmer in poor circumstances.

The Victoria Railways accepted the tender for the erection of 11 gatekeepers cottages on the Inglewood - Dunolly railway line by Scott Bros for 1,487 pounds 6s 6d.

1967 
The Back to Arnold  reunion celebrations were held with more than 400 former residents expected.
The celebrations included  a street procession, back to school sessions with a dinner dance and band in the evening.

It’s reported that Mr Mellon (of the Government Scent Farm) has managed to distil 2.5lb of essential lavender oil worth 8 shillings per lb, 30lb of essential Tansy oil per acre and 70lb of Lemon thyme essential oil per acre,  with greater expectations of medicinal herbs as they grow faster and require less skill.
I have not the foggiest about any of the above but it sounds like a shedload of good stuff....

Mr Kendall’s stolen bicycle was found at Mr Garside’s farm in Harcourt (kms from Castlemaine) where the thief left it and slashed the tyres in a malicious act.

Two earthquake shocks were felt at Dunolly at approx. 11am.
They were travelling from west to east and were also felt in Goldsborough and Bealiba.

The Attorney-General, Mr Drysdale Brown, officially opened the fancy fair and gift sale to aid St Mary’s Church in Dunolly.

The very first Dunolly Agricultural Show was held and proved to be a great success with over 1,600 people attending and a great display of exhibits.

Storekeeper Millane laid charges against A. Downs –
Downs was tarring footpaths, Millane wanted him to stop tarring the path outside his store.
Millane pushed Downs who swung around with tar brush in hand and tarred Millane’s clothes and goods.
Millane then threw entire tar bucket over Downs.
Charges against Downs dropped, Millane awarded damages and costs 7 pounds 16 shillings.

The St Patrick’s Day sports and athletics festival held at the cricket oval at St Arnaud.

The Dunolly and District Agricultural Show was held with success; Mr Costello of Mt Hooghly was the most successful exhibiter with his wines pronounced as excellent quality.

Dunolly & District cricket team (22 of them) vs All England Eleven cricket match was held over two days.
England won by 13 runs.

A mixed sports day carnival was held at Painswick Park in Goldsborough, with a Grand Ball held in the railway goods shed later that evening.
Monies collected from both events went towards both the local library and hospital.

First meeting of the Dunolly Country Women's Association (CWA) was held.
And they've been rockin the Central Goldfields Shire ever since.

While digging in his garden at Dunolly  Mr Esmore found a mysterious curio with Chinese/Japanese characters on it, made of virgin gold, 2.5 inches long, 1 inch wide with only slight hammer marks.

William Twigham, bushranger, had been found guilty of the Policeman John McNally’s murder at Ararat and was hanged at Melbourne Gaol.

1937
A tennis match between a man with a tennis racquet and a man with a frying pan was played at 3am in Dunolly. 
Mr Lawson, hotel keeper at Wedderburn, was defeated last Christmas by shire engineer Mr Hill who used a mandolin.
Lawson wagered that Mr Greenall, using a frying pan, would beat Mr Hill who used a racquet.
Mr Hill was the winner.
Who then ran away to the circus....?

Mr Mellon invited some local dignitaries to the Government Scent Farm where he showed the progress made with fruit and grapes, with Mr Mellon planning to display 25 varieties of extracted scent at the Dunolly Agricultural Show the following week.

Drought trains carrying seed, wheat and fodder for farm stock have been running for the past 3 Sundays to Dunolly and will continue.

William Fitzgerald, the Dunolly town crier, was proclaimed a dangerous lunatic due to alcoholism and was incarcerated in Castlemaine Gaol.

Yes.
Those town criers are a bad sort...clanging those bells, calling out the news at all hours...

The new matron of Dunolly & District Hospital, Matron Harvey, was welcomed by the Hospital Committee members.
Matron, having already inspected the quarters, immediately complained that the washing water at the Nurses’ Home was unsatisfactory and requested something be done immediately.

Death of Sir Peter McBride, one time Agent General of Victoria, Minister for Forests, Mines and Railways, born at Dunolly in 1867.

The Court House Hotel in Ararat was passed from Mrs. Johanna Lannen to her son Mr. John Lannen of Dunolly, a grandson of the original licencee.
The hotel, at this date, had been in the same family continuously for 77 years.

According to an above link the Lannen family ran the hotel for 94 years.

The Dunolly Charity Races, to aid  the funding of the Dunolly & District Hospital, were held, with the Dunolly Hospital Trot won by Dixie McKinney.

A masked intruder attempted to rob Councillor Parker at his home near midnight but got a rude shock to find the councillor was up late listening to the radio in his pjs.
The would-be robber ran off empty handed.

Accidents at Tarnagulla – Mr John Hargraves was thrown from his buggy dislocating his shoulder, William Schofield sustained a gash requiring stitches on his forehead as he was chopping wood and last but not least  R.Cox (the blacksmith’s assistant) sustained a gash on his forearm requiring stitches while he was trying to shoe a fractious horse.
A damn good day for not getting out of bed...

The St Arnaud-Dunolly Railway line was unpassable due to floods shifting the railway ballast.

Chinese miner Ah Hein, aged 76, was found down a mine shaft 20 feet deep with an injured shoulder.
Taken to Dunolly Hospital.
Gotta love the Old Age Pension plan of yesteryear....!

Old Petty Sessions Court House (I think the current Freemason's Lodge) near police station became the Shire Hall.
The Borough Council entertained Shire men to a dinner for the first time that evening.
And twas likely more than iced water, tea and Elderberry cordial being served at table....

This is the Town Hall...which was originally built as the court house...but a different court house...cos they liked to be confusing in Dunolly...

February 24...

1872
Fire at Inglewood devoured the Empire State Hotel, Shamrock Hotel, ironmongery, pastrycook shop and wine shop were completely destroyed.
Leaving nowhere for the good citizens to get a well-earned refreshment or bite to eat.

4 youths were fined 1 pound each for carelessly lighting a fire on the Avoca river while out fishing.
Proving stupidity knows no boundaries of generations or centuries...

Two little girls playing in the street at Tarnagulla picked up a nugget weighing 1oz.

We shall gaze at this scene and not think harsh words at children picking up gold nuggets in the street...and probably using it to play Hopscotch....or Tic Tac Toe...or something...

A church parade was held on the (Deledio) Recreation Reserve by the Rangers and Mounted Rifles with a collection of 12 pounds gathered for infirm soldiers and sailors.

Mr Andrew, manager of Hayes Grocery Business in Dunolly, was slicing bacon when the knife slipped and gashed his knee requiring 7 stitches.

Middle Bridge (now known as Betley) Cricket Team drove to Kingower to play a match, et well at Mrs. Halbert’s Hotel (in Kingower), then set off home at 8.30pm.
Kingower won the cricket.

The Queen Carnival raised 950 pounds for the Dunolly District Hospital with Miss Margaret Taig the winning Queen of the Charity made into a Life Governor.

Again, Miss Margaret Taig of Tarnagulla was unavailable for photos so this nubile young lady stepped in for her.

February 17...

1873
A severe thunderstorm dropped such heavy rain on Dunolly as to turn Broadway into a river-way, completely flooding the west side of Broadway from Bull St up to Mr Bell’s house.

1904 
2 cyclists collided on their way to work, one from the Burnt Creek Company, William Game, the other from the New Birthday Company, William Nankervis.
Their cycles were smashed with Game needing 8 stitches in a gash above his eye.

Rifle match between Dunolly and Inglewood clubs, at Dunolly, was a close match but Inglewood proved to be too good.

Tarnagulla bicycle road race was held, from Tarnagulla to Arnolds-bridge and back,  12 starters with 12 miles in total, results – 1. J.Loas 7.5mins, 2. W.Hughes 3.5mins, 3. R.Onsley 5mins.

A large number of visitors to Melbourne from Dunolly and district arrived by train; they visited the Melbourne  Zoo, then trekked to Mordialloc beach for the Mordialloc Carnival, some of them seeing the sea for the first time, with the Wedderburn contingent picnicking at St Kilda beach then visiting Luna Park.

A young man named Treble was riding to work when his bicycle broke, throwing him to the ground, breaking his nose and lacerating his face.

The town water supply at the reservoir gave out so the council decided at the next meeting to put a pump on the mine dredge site where there is a good supply.

Regulations from the State Executive Council now permit Hairdressers to stay open until 8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, in several areas including the Dunolly district.

Sir Peter McBride was born at Dunolly, 3rd son of Peter and Catherine McBride.
After attending Dunolly State School and Wesley College, Melbourne, he went into his father's St Arnaud timber and general hardware store, later becoming a politician.
