The wowsers were flexing their muscles on September 29...

1913
The Charity Carnival, which had been held for 40 years to aid the Dunolly and District Hospital, was abandoned when the local temperance society protested at, and Borough Council refused a license for, a bar.
At a public meeting it was decided to hold a race meeting with some sports in January or Febuary the following year on private grounds where the temperance society and council would have had no control.

Mr Daly, Mayor of Dunolly, received a letter from the Minister for Railways fixing Tuesday 6th October to officially open the rail line to the public with a banquet that day.

Have a gander at what was said on September 27 in Dunolly!

At the Country Hospital Association annual meeting many delegates felt that the government should offer support owing to the sad state of hospital finances in the past 12 months, with the Dunolly delegate stating,
“Our work has been made impossible by interference by government departments.”

Sedate knees up on September 26

1897
A parade and choral service in connection with the local Prince Alfred Lodge was held with a number of Brethren from Tarnagulla, Timor, Maryborough, and other areas, joining in the parade.
Beautiful weather ensured that the attendance was large and the hall was packed, with addresses on charity from the various but united brotherhood.
The collection was in aid of the Ladies Benevolent Society which raised 10 pounds.

Tongues were wagging at both ends on September 24

Passengers on the Mildura train were delayed at Dunolly for over two hours as the cylinder of the steam engine blew out, word was sent to Maryborough but it took two hours to reach Dunolly.

A Dunolly publican’s daughter went to church one Sunday but actually eloped with the professional musician who had been engaged at the local public concert hall and who had co-incidentally been giving her private music lessons.

On the eve of her wedding, Miss Kennedy, the daughter of the proprietor of the Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser, was presented with a silver fruit and cake dish by staff of the newspaper.

On This Day In Dunolly History September 18....

1856
A Concerned Dunolly Storekeeper wrote to The Argus suggesting that a Gold Office and Gold Escort should be established on the Dunolly goldfield ASAP, owing to the numerous parcels of gold being sent to the Murray for want of a better transport system to Melbourne.

A meeting of the Dunolly Vine and Fruit Growers Association was held in the Dunolly Town Hall to frame rules and elect officers and a committee; there was a great interest in the proceedings and success of the association seems assured.

Mr Herbert Beasy reported his daughter missing after she had gone to gather flowers on the hills with 2 other girls.
A search was immediately started but a phone message from Mrs Morris at Goldsborough reported her safe and sound, having wandered 8 miles.

The Government Gazette announced that the whole of the Borough of Dunolly was to be a district wherein beer licenses may be granted.

The Dunolly and District Hospital finished the year with a deficit of £1470 but this was due to the renovations to update the hospital which were almost finished.

The Havelock Post office (the first one) closed after a record breaking 8 days.

About 9am the cashbox, containing 68ozs of gold and 40 pounds in cash, in the store of Prior and Creig was stolen by a man who bought a red blanket and who then walked behind the counter, while the store was empty, and hid the cashbox in the blanket before leaving.

The annual Dunolly and District Hospital Ball was held to raise funds with more than 300 persons attending, many of whom had travelled from far distances.

It was reported in the Dunolly Express that a dog, belonging to a man in Dunolly, disappears at the same time as the man's train to Maryborough and yet the dog was often found waiting for his master at Maryborough.

Requests were made to the Minister for increased train services between Dunolly and Inglewood as 4 trains per week was insufficient given the amount of developments in the district in recent years.
Promises were made to increase the services to 6 trains per week at the beginning of October.

The Governor of Victoria, Earl of Hoptoun, briefly visited Dunolly on the return train journey from Donald  District Pastoral and Agricultural Society’s Show; while he was formally welcomed to the station by Dunolly Mayor Mr. Russell and cheered by the group of townspeople at the station the Governor was only there for a few minutes as his train was running later than was expected.

A miner named Hicks, from Dunolly, was attacked by a group of Italians at Young’s Derby House at Myers Flat when he was mistaken for the owner of a dog involved in a vicious fight with another dog. He was struck from behind, needing stitches by Dr Nicholson but lapsed into unconsciousness for some time in his tent.
The police rounded up the men involved.

A train engine was partially crippled near Bet Bet station making the train an hour late; the luggage trucks and a carriage had to be left at Dunolly station as they were too much for the engine.
