February 23 #OnThisDay in #Dunolly & District #History

1875 Four youths were fined 1 pound each for carelessly lighting a fire on the Avoca river while out fishing.

 1878 Mr Warr and Mr Greaves were thrown from a springboard cart at Humbug Hill, Rheola, with Warr killed instantly.

 1894 A Concert was held at Llanelly State School to aid the children’s school prize giving fund.

 1895 Ten Mile Australian Bicycle Championship Race was held in Adelaide with Middleton of Dunolly placed 3rd.

1916 The Dunolly Sports Gathering to aid the Dunolly District Hospital took place at the new racecouse in West Dunolly. The weather was fine but warm with a good attendance, the takings amounted to 135 pounds.

 1918 DUNOLLY CHARITY CARNIVAL. DUNOLLY, Monday. The annual charity carnival in aid of the Dunolly District Hospital was held on Saturday and was most Successful. The gate takings were 30 pounds, and, it is anticipated that the gross receipts will be about .200. The fields were good, and several finishes were very- exciting.

 1921 Miss Galehouse who has held the position of first assistant at the Dunolly State School for some years has been transferred to West Preston and was presented with a number of gifts on the eve of her departure.

 1932 A gig driven by William Barker on Holborn Hill collided with a car driven by R Barker resulting in the gig being smashed and Barker suffering from injuried to his ribs and abrasions.

 1935 Dunolly Races were held in aid of the Dunolly hospital in fine weather with a good attendance.

1939 The Dunolly Races were held in aid of raising charity funds for the Dunolly & District  Hospital.
