April 10 #OnThisDay (Nganko Nyawiyu) in #Dunolly (Lea Kurribur) & District #History

1875 An Italian, named Martin Marquesa, fell from the Bet Bet Bridge while intoxicated and later died from head injuries.

 1876 The early train from Maryborough to Bet Bet came to a standstill near Bet Bet as the fire had been allowed to go out.

 1895 70lbs of essential oil from the Dunolly Scent Farm was forwarded to London to ascertain its value in the market.

 1917 One of the most beautiful meteors seen here fell about 10.35 pm. Although the moon was shining brightly it was dimmed, and when the meteor broke into fragments of varied hues the sight was lovely.

 1920 A wood “bee,” organised by local forest officers for the benefit of the Dunolly Hospital, was held last Saturday, when wood cutters and carters from Dunolly, Bromley, Waanyarra, Goldsborough and Moliagul cut about 120tons, 80 of which were carted and stacked in the hospital yard.

 1925 Mr and Mrs Monaghan are leaving the Royal Hotel and many assembled to bid them farewell, joking references made to Mr Monahan’s interest in public affairs including cricket and football, Mrs Monahan was given a clock while Mr Monahan was given a smoker’s outfit.
